So Many Pieces to Sectional Sofas

If you are in the market for a new living room or family room set, there are a few options on the market for you to consider. The most obvious is a couch, a love seat and a chair set. Other options include a hide-a-bed or recliner instead of a traditional couch or chair. Another great option are sectional sofas. A sectional is composed of multiple sections (hence, "sectional") of furniture, that fit together to form one large piece of furniture. Let's take a look at the different pieces available, the purpose they serve and why a sectional may suit your life.

Often the first and most obvious piece of sectional sofas is the couch. As a part of the whole, there is normally just one arm rest, the other side is left open to meet up with another piece.

Sometimes, instead of a traditional couch, a recliner couch is used for the primary piece of the sectional. It is interesting, a couch is normally designed to sit three people, but in our family, when we watch a movie together, one person will call the couch and then lay down on it. Sometimes a younger sibling will get "permission" to curl up at the other end or will lean on their older brother or sister. This usually works fairly well, but three people NEVER sit on the couch to watch TV. A recliner couch helps solve this problem. With a recliner on one end of the couch, one person can fully lay back and relax and leave plenty of room for others. Some recliner couches will have a couple of recliners. Some sectional sofas will even have a small pull-down arm rest between the two recliners that have cup holders in them to hold your drink.

The other sofa option that is real popular in the sectional is the sleeper sofa. This is great for when guests stay over and you do not have a guest room. Just pull out the bed and you are good to go. The sleeper sofa is also fun just to pull out sometimes when having a movie night.

Some sectional sofas have two couches, perhaps one regular and one with recliners. Or a recliner sofa and a sleeper sofa. Regardless of the types of sofas, there is almost always a corner piece that joins the two sofas together to form one unit. The corner comes in two forms, either curved or at a 90 degree angle. The curved sectional sofas usually look more comfy, the curved corner helping to form a continuous line. The 90 degree corner looks more polished and modern.

Besides sectional sofas with two forms of couches joined together with (or without) a corner piece, some sectionals have one long side and one short side. When there is a short side, it is often a recliner. This type of configuration works great if your room is a bit on the small side. But a recliner is not your only option, some sectional sofas have a chaise lounge along one side.

The last piece you see with some sectional sofas are large ottomans. Since my experience shows that most people like to stretch out on a sofa, an ottoman allows this without taking up any more room on the sofa itself. This is a great way to expand the sitting space to seat more people.

As you can tell, sectional sofas can be a great alternative to separate living room pieces. There is a lot of versatility and it can accommodate quite a few people. Plus, they are comfortable and come in a wide variety of styles - something to suit anyone!
